Health Maintenance
Health maintenance begins with making sure that you are covered by health insurance. Whether you stay on your parents plan, are covered by your job or medicaid, or purchase your own, having health insurance coverage is essential.
Staying healthy means having a primary care provider (PCP) or Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) You should schedule a visit with your PCP/APC at least once a year to maintain good health. Having a PCP/APC also means that when you are sick you are able to be treated by a doctor who knows YOU.
Maintaining a healthy weight and BMI are important to health maintenance. Being overweight or underweight can have detrimental effects on your long-term health. A great way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight is to be active and exercise!
Health maintenance involves being up to date on immunizations. Most colleges require a complete immunization record before admission. Some jobs may even require complete immunization records!
According to the CDC, taking care of your teeth is an important step in maintaining health. To maintain healthy teeth and gums, follow these steps: Floss at least once per day. ...Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. ...Use fluoride toothpaste. ...Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months or sooner if needed. ...Eat a healthy diet. ...Avoid sweets and sweetened drinks. ...DO NOT smoke. Most importantly, visit a dentist every 6 months!
Did you know that the largest human organ is the skin? It is important to take care of your skin and to know when a mole or blemish should be examined by a dermatologist.
A yearly eye exam is recommended to maintain optimal vision. If you have never had an eye exam, now is a great time to make an appointment.
Protecting your hearing is important as a young adult. Check out ways to protect your ears and find links to Ear, Nose, & Throat providers.
If you are suddenly sick or injured, you may wonder if you should go to the emergency room or to a medical aid unit. Most medical aid units are equipped to treat NON-life threatening illness and injury. It can be less expensive (even if you have health insurance) and less time consuming to visit a medical aid unit. If you have a life threatening injury or illness, call 911 or go to the emergency room.
Do you know the phrase “you’re only as beautiful as you feel?” This is a perfect example of the crossroad of mental and physical health. Mental health is more than how you feel or a diagnosis; it includes how you manage those feelings, how you perceive and understand the world around you. Examples of mental health and wellness are sleep hygiene, stress management, and of course common disorders such as Anxiety, Depression and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Being aware of and knowing where to seek mental health resources is equally important as seeing your medical provider and dentist.
